Why Exercise Matters for Cats: The Role of Scratching Posts & Active Play

Šapice Pet Wellness

Cats have a reputation for being low-maintenance, independent pets — and while that's partly true, it can lead many Canadian cat owners to underestimate just how important regular physical activity is for their feline companions. Indoor cats in particular, who don't have access to the stimulation of the outdoors, are at significant risk of becoming sedentary, overweight, and behaviourally frustrated.

The solution doesn't require a lot of space or expensive equipment. It starts with understanding what cats actually need — and providing the right tools to meet those needs at home.

Why Cats Need to Exercise

Cats are obligate carnivores and natural hunters. Their bodies are built for short, explosive bursts of activity — stalking, pouncing, climbing, and scratching. Without outlets for these instincts, indoor cats can develop:

  • Obesity — a leading cause of diabetes, joint disease, and shortened lifespan in cats
  • Destructive behaviour — scratching furniture, knocking things over, or excessive vocalization
  • Anxiety and depression — manifesting as over-grooming, hiding, or aggression
  • Muscle atrophy — particularly in senior cats who become increasingly sedentary

In Canada's colder months, when windows stay closed and outdoor access is limited, keeping indoor cats active becomes even more critical.

The Importance of Scratching

Scratching is one of the most fundamental feline behaviours — and one of the most misunderstood. Cats scratch for several important reasons:

  • Claw maintenance — removing the outer sheath of the claw to expose the sharp layer beneath
  • Stretching — a full-body stretch that engages the spine, shoulders, and forelimbs
  • Scent marking — cats have scent glands in their paws; scratching deposits their unique scent signature
  • Stress relief — scratching is a self-soothing behaviour that helps cats regulate their emotions

Providing appropriate scratching surfaces isn't just about protecting your furniture — it's about meeting a genuine physical and psychological need.

Choosing the Right Scratching Post

Not all scratching posts are created equal. To be effective, a scratching post should be:

  • Tall enough for a full stretch — at least 60–70 cm for most cats
  • Stable — a wobbly post will be avoided or knocked over
  • Made of the right material — sisal rope and natural fibres are preferred by most cats over carpet
  • Positioned correctly — near sleeping areas or in prominent locations where cats naturally want to stretch

Beyond Scratching: Building an Active Routine

Scratching posts are just one piece of the puzzle. A well-rounded activity routine for an indoor cat should also include:

  • Interactive play sessions — at least two 10–15 minute sessions daily using wand toys or laser pointers
  • Climbing opportunities — cat trees, wall shelves, or window perches that encourage vertical movement
  • Puzzle feeders and enrichment — making mealtime mentally stimulating
  • Catnip stimulation — our Noba Bliss Catnip and Noba Mist Catnip Spray are excellent tools for encouraging active play and engagement

Signs Your Cat Isn't Getting Enough Exercise

Watch for these indicators that your cat needs more activity:

  • Weight gain or visible loss of muscle tone
  • Excessive sleeping beyond the normal 12–16 hours
  • Scratching furniture despite having a post available
  • Increased aggression or irritability
  • Repetitive behaviours like over-grooming

A proactive approach to your cat's physical health pays dividends in longevity, behaviour, and quality of life. The good news is that even small changes — a better scratching post, a daily play session, a spritz of catnip — can make a meaningful difference.
