Tofu vs. Cassava Cat Litter: Which Is Right for Your Cat?
Šapice Pet WellnessThe cat litter market has changed dramatically over the past few years. Clay litters — long the default choice for Canadian cat owners — are increasingly being replaced by plant-based alternatives that are biodegradable, low-dust, and far gentler on both cats and the environment. Two of the most popular natural options are tofu litter and cassava litter.
Both are excellent choices. But they're not identical — and understanding the differences will help you choose the right one for your cat's preferences, your household setup, and your sustainability goals.
What Is Tofu Cat Litter?
Tofu litter is made from the byproduct of soy milk production — the okara (soy pulp) that remains after the liquid is extracted. This material is dried, compressed into pellets or granules, and used as a litter substrate. It's a genuine upcycled product: material that would otherwise be discarded is given a second life as a functional, high-performance litter.
Tofu litter is:
- Biodegradable and flushable — small amounts can be flushed in most Canadian plumbing systems (check local guidelines)
- Very low dust — ideal for cats and owners with respiratory sensitivities
- Naturally odour-absorbing — soy has natural deodorizing properties
- Soft texture — gentle on sensitive paws, particularly suitable for kittens, declawed cats, or post-surgical recovery
- Clumping — forms firm, easy-to-scoop clumps when wet
What Is Cassava Cat Litter?
Cassava litter is made from the cassava root — a starchy tuber widely cultivated in tropical regions and one of the world's most important food crops. The starch extracted from cassava has exceptional binding and clumping properties, making it a highly effective litter base.
Cassava litter is:
- Biodegradable and compostable — breaks down naturally and can be composted (not for use on edible plants)
- Extremely strong clumping — cassava starch forms very firm, tight clumps that are easy to scoop cleanly
- Low tracking — the granule structure tends to stay in the box better than finer litters
- Naturally scented options available — our vanilla cassava litter adds a subtle, pleasant scent without synthetic fragrances
- Heavier than tofu — the denser granules feel more substantial underfoot
Head-to-Head Comparison
Clumping Strength
Cassava wins. Cassava starch produces exceptionally firm, tight clumps that hold together well during scooping. Tofu clumps are good but slightly softer and more prone to breaking apart if not scooped promptly.
Dust Levels
Tofu wins. Tofu litter is among the lowest-dust options available — an important consideration for cats with asthma or owners with dust allergies. Cassava is also low-dust compared to clay, but tofu has the edge.
Texture and Paw Feel
Tofu wins for sensitive paws. The softer, finer texture of tofu litter is gentler underfoot — particularly important for kittens, senior cats, or cats recovering from paw injuries. Cassava's denser granules are comfortable for most cats but may be less appealing to very sensitive individuals.
Odour Control
Draw — with a scent edge to cassava. Both litters control odour effectively through natural absorption. Our Vanilla Cassava Cat Litter adds a subtle vanilla scent that many owners find pleasant, while our tofu options — Green Tea Tofu and Original & Green Tea Mix — use green tea's natural deodorizing properties for a fresher scent profile.
Tracking
Cassava wins. The heavier, denser granules of cassava litter track less than the lighter tofu pellets. If tracking is a significant issue in your home, cassava has a practical advantage.
Flushability
Tofu wins. Tofu litter is generally considered more flushable than cassava, though we always recommend checking your local municipal guidelines before flushing any litter.
Environmental Impact
Both are excellent. Both are plant-based, biodegradable, and vastly more sustainable than clay litter. Tofu litter has the added benefit of being an upcycled byproduct. Cassava is a rapidly renewable crop with a low environmental footprint.
Our Range
- Green Tea Tofu Cat Litter — soft, low-dust, naturally deodorising with green tea; ideal for sensitive cats and multi-cat households
- Tofu Cat Litter — Original & Green Tea Mix — a blend of original and green tea tofu for balanced performance and scent
- Vanilla Cassava Cat Litter — strong clumping, low tracking, with a subtle natural vanilla scent
Which Should You Choose?
- Choose tofu if your cat has sensitive paws, respiratory issues, or you want the most flushable option
- Choose cassava if clumping strength and low tracking are your top priorities, or if you prefer a lightly scented litter
- Try both — cats have strong preferences, and the only way to know which your cat prefers is to test; introduce the new litter gradually by mixing it with the current litter over 7–10 days
Either way, you're making a significantly better choice for your cat and the planet than conventional clay litter.
