Tendons, Trachea & Pork: The Natural Chews Most Canadian Dog Owners Haven't Tried Yet

Šapice Pet Wellness

Most dog owners have a short mental list of natural chews: bully sticks, yak chews, maybe coffee wood. Beyond that, the options get unfamiliar quickly — and a lot of genuinely excellent chews get overlooked simply because they're less well-known.

Beef tendons, trachea, and pork-based chews fall squarely into that category. They're not exotic or complicated — they're straightforward, single-ingredient, Canadian-made chews with distinct nutritional profiles and textures that fill gaps the more popular options don't. Here's what they are and who they're for.

Beef Tendons: High-Protein, Long-Lasting, Joint-Supportive

Beef tendon is the connective tissue that attaches muscle to bone. Dried, it becomes a dense, satisfying chew that most dogs work through slowly — making it one of the better options for dogs that demolish softer chews too quickly.

Nutritionally, beef tendon is high in protein and low in fat, with a naturally occurring collagen content that supports joint health, skin, and coat. Like chicken feet, tendon is a whole-food source of the compounds found in joint supplements — but in a longer-lasting format that also delivers significant dental benefit through extended chewing.

We carry two sizes to suit different breeds and chewing intensities:

  • 4–7" Beef Tendon — suited to small and medium breeds, or as a moderate-duration chew for larger dogs.
  • 8–12" Beef Tendon — a serious chew for medium to large breeds. Long-lasting, satisfying, and excellent for dogs that need extended mental engagement.

Both are sourced and made in Canada, 100% natural, with no hormones, antibiotics, or preservatives.

Trachea: The Overlooked Glucosamine Chew

Trachea — the windpipe of cattle or lamb — is one of the richest natural sources of glucosamine and chondroitin available in treat form. The cartilage rings that make up the trachea are almost pure glycosaminoglycans — the same compounds found in joint supplements, delivered in a whole-food, fully digestible format.

The texture is softer than tendon, making trachea a good option for puppies, seniors, and dogs with sensitive teeth. The hollow structure also makes it useful as a stuffable chew — fill it with a small amount of wet food or peanut butter for an enrichment treat that keeps dogs engaged longer.

We carry three trachea options:

  • 5–7" Lamb Trachea — a smaller lamb trachea, well-suited to small and medium breeds. Single ingredient, high in protein, low in fat.
  • 7"+ Lamb Trachea — the larger lamb option, suitable for medium to large breeds.
  • 8–9" Veal Trachea — Canadian-made and baked (not fried), veal trachea is a slightly firmer option than lamb with a different flavour profile. A good choice for dogs that have tried lamb and need variety, or for those on a rotation protocol.

For dogs already on a joint supplement, trachea provides complementary whole-food support. For dogs not yet on a supplement, it's one of the most cost-effective ways to introduce glucosamine and chondroitin into the diet. Pork Chews: The Underrated Protein

Pork is one of the most palatable proteins for dogs — highly digestible, flavourful, and broadly tolerated. Yet pork-based chews are consistently overlooked in favour of beef and chicken. That's a missed opportunity, particularly for dogs that need protein rotation or have developed sensitivities to more common proteins.

All of our pork chews are sourced and made in Canada from 100% Canadian pork, with no preservatives, hormones, or antibiotics.

Pork Ear

Pork ears are a medium-duration chew with a satisfying crunch that most dogs find irresistible. They're naturally high in protein, with phosphorus and calcium for bone health, and low enough in calories to work as a regular treat without significantly impacting daily intake.

The texture is firm enough to provide real dental benefit — the chewing action scrapes plaque and tartar from the tooth surface — but soft enough to be appropriate for most dogs, including seniors. Fully digestible, with no risk from large indigestible pieces.

Note: some pork ears have visible identification tattoos — these use non-toxic, food-safe ink and are completely safe for dogs.

Pork Skin Rolls

Think of a pork skin roll as a large, rolled-up pork rind — baked (never fried), single ingredient, 100% digestible. The rolled structure gives dogs something to work through, making them longer-lasting than a flat skin piece while remaining fully digestible.

Pork skin is high in collagen, which supports skin, coat, and connective tissue. The baked texture provides good dental friction without being hard enough to risk tooth fracture — a useful middle ground between soft chews and hard chews.

Pork Liver Jerky

Pork liver jerky is a hard, crunchy treat rather than a chew — better suited as a high-value training reward or a flavourful topper than as a sustained chewing activity. Pork liver is rich in amino acids, fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals, and is highly palatable even for picky eaters.

One note: pork liver is higher in fat than chicken or beef liver, so it's best used in moderation as part of a balanced diet rather than as a daily staple. For dogs that need a high-value motivator for training, it's one of the most effective options available.

Building a Chew Rotation

The most effective approach to natural chews isn't picking one and sticking with it — it's rotating across different proteins and textures to provide variety, prevent boredom, and ensure a broad nutritional profile. Tendons, trachea, and pork chews all complement the more familiar options well:

  • Trachea alongside a joint supplement for dogs with mobility concerns
  • Pork ears as a daily dental chew for dogs that find bully sticks too rich
  • Beef tendon as a long-duration weekend chew for high-energy dogs
  • Pork skin rolls as a collagen-rich alternative to rawhide
