Silvervine vs. Catnip: Which Is Better for Your Cat?

Šapice Pet Wellness

If you've ever watched a cat go absolutely wild over a toy stuffed with catnip, you already know the power of plant-based cat stimulants. But catnip isn't the only option — and for many cats, it's not even the best one. Silvervine, a plant native to the mountainous regions of Asia, is rapidly gaining popularity among Canadian cat owners as a more potent, longer-lasting alternative. So which should you choose for your cat?

What Is Catnip?

Catnip (Nepeta cataria) is a member of the mint family native to Europe and Asia, now widely grown across North America. Its active compound, nepetalactone, binds to receptors in a cat's nasal tissue and triggers a euphoric response — rolling, rubbing, vocalising, and playful behaviour — that typically lasts 5–15 minutes, followed by a refractory period of 20–30 minutes during which the cat is temporarily immune to its effects.

Approximately 50–70% of cats respond to catnip. The response is hereditary — kittens under 6 months and some adult cats simply don't react, regardless of exposure.

What Is Silvervine?

Silvervine (Actinidia polygama) is a climbing plant from the family Actinidiaceae, used in traditional Asian medicine and as a cat stimulant for centuries in Japan and China. It contains not one but two active compounds — actinidine and dihydroactinidiolide — which together produce a stronger and often longer-lasting response than catnip alone.

Crucially, silvervine works on a broader range of cats. Studies show that up to 80% of cats respond to silvervine — including many that don't respond to catnip at all. This makes it particularly valuable for owners whose cats have always seemed indifferent to catnip.

Which Should You Choose?

If your cat already loves catnip — stick with it, or add silvervine as a rotation to keep things novel. If your cat has never responded to catnip, silvervine is almost certainly worth trying. Many owners find that alternating between the two — using catnip one session and silvervine the next — prevents habituation and keeps enrichment sessions exciting.
